چکیده

Iron (Fe) is an essential metal that plays important roles in physiology. Iron is responsible for a vast array of biochemical reactions, including supporting cell division, oxygen transport and mitochondrial function [1,2]. Iron deficiency is the most prevalent single nutrient deficiency worldwide [2,3] and results in anemia, retarded growth, fatigue, muscle weakness and shortness of breath [2,4,5]. Iron is also required in the brain for neurotransmitter synthesis, neurotransmitter signaling, and myelin synthesis of the oligodendrocytes [6,7]. Many neurological disorders associated with iron deficiency have been reported. For example, iron deficiency has been associated with poor fine and gross motor skills, visual-motor integration, language and global IQ, accompanying higher scores in anxiety and depression as well as social and attention problems [8,10].

Iron-Responsive Olfactory Uptake of Manganese Improves Motor Function Deficits Associated with Iron Deficiency

Iron-responsive manganese uptake is increased in iron-deficient rats, suggesting that toxicity related to manganese exposure could be modified by iron status. To explore possible interactions, the distribution of intranasally-instilled manganese in control and iron-deficient rat brain was characterized by quantitative image analysis using T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Manganese ...

Olfactory ferric and ferrous iron absorption in iron-deficient rats.

The absorption of metals from the nasal cavity to the blood and the brain initiates an important route of occupational exposures leading to health risks. Divalent metal transporter-1 (DMT1) plays a significant role in the absorption of intranasally instilled manganese, but whether iron uptake would be mediated by the same pathway is unknown. In iron-deficient rats, blood (59)Fe levels after int...

Olfactory uptake of manganese requires DMT1 and is enhanced by anemia.

Manganese, an essential nutrient, can also elicit toxicity in the central nervous system (CNS). The route of exposure strongly influences the potential neurotoxicity of manganese-containing compounds. Recent studies suggest that inhaled manganese can enter the rat brain through the olfactory system, but little is known about the molecular factors involved. Divalent metal transporter-1 (DMT1) is...

Effect of combined administration of Zinc chloride and Aluminum chloride on memory and motor activity of young rats

Introduction: Aluminum is known as a neurotoxic element which causes neurodegeneration, learning deduction and movement disorders. Aluminum ions in the brain cause serious problems such as Alzheimer, Parkinson and other degenerative diseases. On the other hand, Zinc is a dietary element essential for several biological processes, modulates neurotransmission in brain regions and associates wi...

Olive (Olea europaea L.) leaf extract prevents motor deficit in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Introduction:Olive leaves have been recommended in the scientific literature and traditional medicine as a cure for the treatment of diabetes and this plant has powerful antioxidants and neuroprotective effects. Here, we studied the possible effects of olive leaf extract (OLE) on motor deficits in diabetic neuropathy. Methods:The rotarod treadmill test was used to access motor coordination...
